DISCARDED FISHING LINE HARMFUL TO WILDLIFE
DURANGO, Colo. -- Fishing line discarded along waterways can harm animals, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials urge anglers to dispose of line properly.
Every year dozens of birds and small mammals in Colorado get tangled up in fishing line along rivers, creeks and reservoirs.
"Fishing line left on the bank is dangerous," said Scott Gilmore, statewide angler education coordinator for Parks and Wildlife. "An animal can't untangle itself from fishing line so it is often
fatal.
Earlier this summer, a kingfisher--a bird that lives along riparian areas--was found hanging dead in a tree along the Uncompahgre River in Montrose, hopelessly tangled in fishing line. During his
career, Gilmore has seen lots of birds that have died in the same way. When a bird becomes tangled, it can't fly, run or protect itself from predators.
"There's no reason to toss line on the ground," Gilmore said. "Just stuff it in your pocket and throw it away at home."
Some birds use fishing line to build nests. The result is that chicks and young waterfowl end up tangled in the mess.
Fishing line also cuts into the tender legs and feet of birds, waterfowl and other wildlife. Those cuts then can become infected and result in an agonizing death for the animals. Pets can also get
tangled in fishing line with a potential to cause injury.
Monofilament line is very strong and can remain hazardous for years. Unfortunately, line can be found along reservoirs and stream banks throughout the state.
Anglers who see line should pick it up. Also, tell youngsters and inexperienced anglers about the dangers.
"It's easy to perform this small service for the environment and wildlife" Gilmore said. "Carry out your own line and pick up line and other trash you see in the places you fish."

Images submitted to the Crystal Lakes website are accepted for consideration under the following terms:
1. You retain ownership of any image you contribute which is your original work. Images sent from third parties should only be by permission of the organization or individual who owns it, who also must agree to this submission policy.
2. You understand that submitted images may or may not appear on the Crystal Lakes website and its related forms of publication, now or in the future. We anticipate that each week many more images will be received than space allotted for publication.
3. By submitting any image, you are granting to Crystal Lakes the unrestricted, non-exclusive right to use it now and in the future. This includes modifying the original image dimensions, brightness, contrast, etc., retouching or removal of any visible time stamps or lettering, and adding the customary framing, watermark, etc.
4. Images used become a permanent part of the Crystal Lakes website and its product offerings (calendars, screen savers, etc.) By virtue of appearance on the web, such images also become a permanent part of search engine caching libraries (such as google.com) and online archiving organizations (such as archive.org).
5. Images not immediately used become a permanent part of the Crystal Lakes library of unpublished files, for possible future use. In some cases, contributed images may appear several years after the date they were originally received.
6. The Gallery may link to external sites, which are not necessarily endorsed by Crystal Lakes. The Gallery itself is not intended for commercial use (shopping cart sales, etc.)
7. Crystal Lakes reserves the right at its own discretion to limit or discontinue Gallery albums which appear substantially unrelated to the primary focus and purpose of this website.
8. By submitting any image, you are indicating you have read and understood this policy and agree to its terms.
